As part of the ongoing Presidential County Tour by His Excellency Dr. George Manneh Weah, diverse women from Bong County converged at the Capital -Gbarnga and presented gifts to the Liberian Leader and his wife Amb. Clar Maria Weah on Sunday, February 14, 2021. The women used the occasion to laud the President for the tremendous progress made across the country.
According to them, they are excited to experience the construction of roads, the unprecedented construction of modern markets, free education in public institutions, the ongoing electrification of cities and towns of Liberia among others.
The women thanked the President for an ongoing micro loan scheme they are receiving through their lawmaker Hon Melvin Cole. They petitioned the Feminist-In-Chief to continue and expand the micro loan to rural women of Bong County as they [rural women] are in dire need and said initiative will further enhance economic empowerment.
The First Lady Amb Clar Maria Weah received the petition on behalf of her husband.
Additionally, the Head of the Female Traditional Leaders of Bong County pleaded with President Weah to construct cultural heritage centers in all fifteen (15) counties of Liberia. She stated that culture promotes people’s values, beliefs, and it allows people to maintain a unique identity in society.
In a statement of appreciation, the Feminist-In-Chief His Excellency Dr. George Manneh Weah extolled the courageous women of Bong for the gifts and recognition of his government's efforts in addressing the economic and social issues of the country.
President Weah assured the women of his government's unflinching support to women empowerment and the protection of their rights.
Earlier on, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection Madam Williametta E. Saydee-Tarr met with the women and encouraged them to join in keeping the conversation of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) at the community level and to help encourage men to become HeforShe campaigners so as to stop SGBV especially rape.
Minister Saydee-Tarr cautioned the women not to waiver nor attempt to compromise sexual and gender-based violence cases especially rape as doing so would instantly reverse the gains made by the government and thus placing the very women and girls lives at risk.
The Gender Boss took time to further explain the referral pathway of reporting SGBV cases whenever rape or domestic violence occurred.
According to the Executive Mansion release, the Presidential County Tour is an appreciation for the confidence reposed in President Weah as well as to listen to burning issues effecting the livelihood of the people.
