The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, with support from its partners, has commenced a five-day intensive training program aimed at preparing operators for the soon-to-be-relaunched 116 Call Center. This initiative is a significant step in the Government of Liberia’s efforts to strengthen response mechanisms and pathways in the fight against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).
The training, which began on Monday, December 2, 2024, is taking place at the Ministry’s headquarters in Monrovia. The program targets a group of highly dedicated individuals who will serve as call center agents, equipping them with the necessary skills to handle sensitive cases effectively. The rebranded 116 Call Center will serve as a critical national resource for survivors of SGBV, offering 24/7 support, guidance, and referrals.
During the opening ceremony, Deputy Minister of Gender, Atty. Laura Golakeh, emphasized the importance of the training, describing it as an opportunity for participants to contribute meaningfully to government’s effort to curb all forms of violence against women, girls and children.
“This training is more than just a learning experience; it is a chance to give back to Liberia. The rebranded 116 Call Center is a vital tool in our fight against SGBV, and we count on your commitment to make it a success,” she stated.
The call center is designed to provide survivors of SGBV with timely assistance, including psychosocial support, legal referrals, and emergency response coordination. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and staffed by trained professionals, the center will facilitate confidential reporting and ensure that survivors receive appropriate care and support. Additionally, the center aims to raise public awareness about SGBV and encourage more survivors to come forward.
The 116 Call Center’s relaunch, scheduled for December 10, 2024, will be a highlight of the ongoing 16 Days of Activism Against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence. This global campaign seeks to galvanize action and commitments to end violence against women and girls. The rebranded center aligns with this goal by creating a safer environment for survivors to report abuse and access critical services.
The Ministry also expressed its gratitude to partners whose technical and financial support made the training and relaunch possible.
With this initiative, the Ministry reaffirms its commitment to building a safer, more inclusive Liberia, free from SGBV.
