On August 1-2, 2024, the Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MGCSP), in collaboration with its partners, the United Nations and the European Union hosted a pivotal two-day workshop at Corina Hotel in Sinkor.
The event marked the commencement of the Liberia Spotlight Initiative (LSI) 2.0 National Consultation, a critical step in the country’s ongoing efforts to combat gender-based violence (GBV) and to eliminate violence against women and girls.
The workshop convened over 40 participants from Montserrado County, including representatives from civil society organizations, government agencies, and international partners. Those stakeholders gathered to assess the current landscape of GBV in Liberia, share insights, and strategize on the most effective approaches to advance the LSI 2.0 objectives.
Throughout the two-day consultation, participants engaged in in-depth analyses of the prevalence and root causes of GBV in the country. The discussions focused on identifying gaps in existing interventions, strengthening multi-sectoral responses, and ensuring that the voices of women and girls are at the forefront of policymaking and program implementation.
The LSI 2.0 is a continuation of the global Spotlight Initiative, with a specific focus on Liberia. It aims to build on the progress made under the previous phase by enhancing the effectiveness and reach of interventions designed to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls.
The initiative underscored the importance of coordinated efforts, community engagement, and the empowerment of women and girls as key drivers of sustainable change. As the workshop concluded, participants expressed a renewed commitment to the goals of the Liberia Spotlight Initiative 2.0. The strategies and action plans developed during the consultation will serve as a roadmap for the next phase of the initiative, ensuring that Liberia remains steadfast in its mission to create a society free from violence and discrimination.
The MGCSP, along with its UN and EU partners, reaffirmed their dedication to supporting these efforts and to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to achieve a future where women and girls can live in dignity, safety, and equality.
