Gender Minister Gbeme Horace-Kollie has underscored the critical importance of human rights programs for young women. Minister Horace-Kollie stated that empowering young women and girls to advocate for their rights and the rights of others is essential in combating sexual and gender-based violence.
She made this statement on Wednesday at program marking the inaugural cohort of the Young Human Rights Advocates, a pioneering initiative under the Liberia Media Empowerment Project (LMEP).
The program seeks to empower young citizens in Liberia by enhancing their understanding and advocacy skills in human rights and democratic accountability.
“These programs provide our enterprising youthful generation with the tools and knowledge necessary to challenge inequalities and advocate for justice in all sectors of our society,” she said.
“The Ministry of Gender finds this initiative of great interest because it aligns perfectly with the government’s ongoing efforts to promote rights-based initiatives aimed at addressing sexual and gender-based violence, workplace harassment, child abuse, trafficking, and the unprecedented wave of child labor.”
This program is being implemented by Messengers of Peace Liberia Inc. in collaboration with Internews and the Independent National Human Rights Commission of Liberia (INHRCL) with funding from the European Union.
Minister Horace-Kollie emphasized the indispensable role of media and information in today’s rapidly evolving world.
“We can highlight injustices, raise awareness, and mobilize action through accurate, responsible, and impactful storytelling. We believe this program will empower our youthful populace to harness the power of media to amplify the voices of the marginalized and shed light on the issues that matter most.”
“The Ministry of Gender is committed to supporting initiatives that advance human rights, gender equality, and social justice.”
“As we witness the launch of this program, let us pledge to collectively support the organizers with unwavering determination, ensuring that this effort impacts a larger community of our young people, particularly women and girls.”
Minister Horace-Kollie also applauded Messengers of Peace Inc. for the initiative and congratulated the young advocates for seizing the opportunity to venture into human rights advocacy.
