The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), is expected to convene a crucial Technical Working Meeting today, beginning at 2:00 PM, at the Ministry of Internal Affairs. This meeting marks a significant milestone in Liberia’s ongoing efforts to eliminate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) through legislative reform and strategic stakeholder coordination.
The objective of the meeting is to review and refine the Draft FGM Bill. The session will bring together key government entities, civil society organizations, traditional leaders, and development partners to conduct a comprehensive review of the Draft FGM Bill. The goal is to build consensus on a unified advocacy position and develop a coordinated strategy for legislative engagement ahead of a forthcoming high-level policy dialogue.
The meeting will serve as a forum for technical analysis of the Draft FGM Bill. Participants will engage in detailed discussions to ensure that the draft law is both legally sound and culturally sensitive. Key objectives include:
Conducting a detailed review and technical analysis of the bill;
Build consensus and develop a unified advocacy strategy;
Finalize a set of key advocacy messages for legislative stakeholders;
Define roles, responsibilities, and timelines for moving forward.
Representatives from the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health, Independent National Commission on Human Rights, Law Reform Commission, Association of Female Lawyers of Liberia, and the Legislature Gender Committee are expected to participate in the meeting. Civil society organizations, traditional leaders, and representatives from UN Women, UNFPA, UNICEF, and the World Bank will also play a pivotal role in the discussions.
