MGCSP is deeply concerned about the recent attack on Mariama

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MGCSP) is deeply concerned about the recent attack on Mariama, a survivor of brutal abuse by her ex-boyfriend, Abraham Perry.

Mariama was subjected to a vicious assault on May 8, 2024, where she sustained multiple stab wounds inflicted by Abraham using machetes outside her friend’s house. The severity of the attack resulted in Mariama suffering from broken hands and severe cuts, requiring surgery and ongoing medical care.

The Ministry of Gender reiterates its firm stance against all forms of violence against women and girls. We remain dedicated to providing comprehensive psychosocial support to survivors like Mariama, ensuring their recovery and well-being.

Our social workers are actively involved in providing Mariama with the necessary interventions, including additional support for her medication and recovery. Counseling sessions have been arranged twice a week to assist Mariama during her hospitalization period.

According to Dr. Chea, the interim doctor at the Trauma Wall where Mariama is receiving care, she will require further monitoring and treatment before being discharged. Weekly wound dressing and monitoring of her hands will be necessary to assess her recovery progress.

We urge the Ministry of Justice to expedite the apprehension of the perpetrator, Abraham Perry, and ensure that he faces the full force of the law for his heinous actions.
The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection stands firm in its commitment to ending the scourge of violence against women and girls. We call on the public to join us in our efforts to create a society where such acts are not tolerated, and survivors receive the support they need to rebuild their lives.
