Gender Launches Women’s Employment and Empowerment Taskforce
In August 2026, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, through its Liberia Women Empowerment Project (LWEP), launched the Liberia Women’s Employment and Empowerment Taskforce, a strategic platform designed to bring together government, the private sector, civil society, and development partners to expand meaningful employment and economic opportunities for Liberian women.
The Taskforce will complement LWEP’s livelihood and cash grant interventions by strengthening market linkages, inclusive sourcing, mentorship, internships, and strategic partnerships that can help women transition from receiving support to accessing sustainable markets, decent jobs, investments, and business opportunities.
Speaking at the launch, Assistant Minister for Gender, Hon. Ophelia Kennedy, emphasized that the Taskforce is intended to drive concrete action.
“This Taskforce is about action. It is about ensuring that Liberian women, whether in the city or in the villages, have access to training, jobs, and the support they need to build businesses.”
With the broader goal of establishing a sustainable national platform for women’s employment and economic empowerment, the Taskforce will identify barriers, develop actionable strategies, promote gender-inclusive practices, and strengthen collaboration among key stakeholders.
Already, LWEP has supported 418 women-led businesses with more than US$1 million in cash grants, benefiting over 9,000 individuals across 498 communities in six counties.
The launch marks another step toward ensuring that women are connected not only to grants, but also to markets, jobs, investment, mentorship, and sustainable livelihoods.
