Women Empowerment Division
The Women Empowerment Division leads on designing, developing and implementing frameworks for mainstreaming women in the work of ministries, agencies, commissions and all other public institutions. The Division leads on the advocacy of women’s issues by developing and implementing a framework for their promotion and empowerment; as well as preparing and implementing national information, education and communication (IEC) programs on women.
With guidance from the Minister and the Deputy Minister for Gender, the Division provides technical support for the annual observance of the International Women’s Day, International Day for Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), All Men Conference; as well as providing support to Liberia’s participation to the Sessions of the United Nation’s Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).
The Director and Assistant Director head the Division, respectively, with support from other staff members to include, the Administrative Assistant, Program Officer and Officer Assistant.
The Division comprises of the below Units:
- Gender & HIV/AIDS Unit: The Unit, headed by a Supervisor, is responsible to review, align and adopt strategies relevant to the protection of and response to women’s specific related gender and HIV/AIDS issues;
- Human Rights Unit: The Unit, headed by a Supervisor, is responsible to design, develop and implement frameworks that ensure compliance with human rights issues and instruments relating to women and adolescent girls. The Unit also coordinates the preparation of reports required by national and international bodies and treaties on gender issues, including reports on the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325, National Review on the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and the Liberia National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security, as well as other reports on the state of women and adolescent girls;
